NEWTON ABBOT
On our return from Besigheim, we knew that at the end of the month we would see
two of the DRK friends and their families, as they were coming over to England
for their holidays and were camping just outside Newton Abbot.
One night we had a barbeque, at what is now the tiggly -winkles hedgehog
sanctuary, then it was a farm, one of our Red Cross members new the farmers wife.
I've only got one photo of the night, as the next ones were on transparencies.
The one above is of Dieter franks, Louise and Gabriele, Dieters wife.
The other friends were Gunther Witt his wife Inget, their sons Andreas and Thomas.
The following evening they came round to us and we had laid on a finger buffet.
The next day before they moved on to Cornwall we went to see them at the camp
site and said our goodbyes.
In 1984 the Newton Abbot Twinning Association asked for beds, for some of the Besigheim running club members who were running from Besigheim to Newton Abbot, plus they were being escorted by two DRK ambulances and DRK personel.
Barbara and I said we would have 3 runners and a DRK member. They arrived in the middle of June. I think it was 8 runners and 3 DRK members. Here they are in Newton.

Ecorted by the Town Crier.
The Mayor of Newton Abbot, welcomed the runners after their 1100 KM run, at the
St. Leonard's Tower in Newton, while they were taking well earnd refreshments.

Front row left to right. Kurt Zolle DRK, Barbara, her Mum, Me, then back row three of the runners, Harald Yoos, Martin Yoos and Walter Veyhl. Luckily Barbara ran a B &B in our home so we had room to put them all up.
On any twinning trip, the hosts look after their guests free of charge and the same thing happens when we go to our German or French twin towns.
About two weeks after the runners had returned home the DRK came to visit. The coach arrived at the Recreational Trust Ground in Newton and all the friends from last year met up again.
We had our friends Monika and Wolfgang and their two children Stefanie & Alexander staying with us.
Wolfgang Bopp President of the Besigheim DRK presenting Joan Brimble the Divisional Director with a photo. (I've forgoten what of).
Klaus and Ulrich giving Joan some goodies.
Harald Yoos, one of the runners who had stayed behind in England to tour around
on his bicycle, (the bicycle was brought over in one of the ambulances), returned
to stay with us and would be going back on the coach (not forgetting his bike) as
Monika & Wolfgang were still staying with us we took them all out on to Dartmoor,
as we only had a sports car, two seater, Spitfire, I hired a minibus for the weekend.
